The future of knowledge - w 46

This week has been all about taking in the thoughts and critique given on the mid-crit and trying to incorporate that into our current idea. The main critique was that we needed to narrow it down. We can’t focus on the technical aspects, as well as the AI, as well as the design and as well as the HCI. We have to start to focus on some specific points more intensively. That’s what we have done this week. We decided that our main idea with the wearable technology that gives you info about for surroundings is good as is, however we have shifted focus to how you add data to this knowledge bank. As it was before the wearable would pretty much recite wikipedia and take into account meta data recorded (such average interest aggregators). Wikipedia is fine and all, but the problem is that wikipedia has been around for a while and yet, the collaboration is not really something that the layperson does in their daily life. Why? There seems to be too much of threshold, still, for a regular person to just on a whim go in and edit something on wikipedia that he or she has encountered and knows is incorrect. So how do we come up with a way to lower this threshold? We have started to do literature research on motivation, and the closest field is motivation for user generated content. An edit or post on wikipedia is user generated content. Why don’t people behave like they do on sites on youtube? Making an intricate youtube video involves more work and labour than contributing on wikipedia, yet there is an unbalance between amount of users and contributors still. So it must become even easier.  There are some of the things that we have thought and worked on this week.

Realizing where we are in the project as well as looking forward in to the future to see where we have to be in about 5 weeks is somewhat of a theme this week as well. Saying that “well we have to focus on a selected array of things because that’s all we have time for” is not only essential to getting this project to the finish line but also important for the scope of the project. In a futuristic project like this there is no point of working on every little detail of a vision because it is a vision, and there has to scientific advances in order for a futuristic media related vision of a product released 20 years from now to even make sense. So we are thankful for the “short” time we have left..

  1. Sounds like you have done some progress when planning your project. A detailed project plan with a time plan might be a good idea, as well as a list of who is doing what in the project. Dividing up the work load between you is a good way of getting a lot done in a short period of time. Good luck with the continuation of your project!
